Nest building

This morning I noticed a great tit perching in the conifer where we have put up a nest box  so decided to watch it as I could see it had a beak full of nesting material. To my delight it entered the  nest box so I am hoping we should have a family of great tits before too long!

 A couple of times when entering the bird hide shed I have noticed a woodpigeon fly out, from between the outside slats and upon investigation today I found out why!  This is a bit unfortunate as the shed is being demolished and re-built in a couple of weeks!

Tiny fruits

Now most of the plum, pear and apricot blossom has finished, we can see the tiny fruits forming. Lots of pears, quite a few plums but only the odd apricot due to the frosts in April.  As we wont be spraying, not sure how many fruits will develop and be good enough to eat but its interesting watching them grow. plums pears a single apricot

Fox cub!

 It has been lovely seeing new life on the farm this Spring including a blackbird nesting in our old shed,  great tits successfully fledging from one of our bird boxes, ducklings and moorhen chicks on the ponds but especially last evening I was able to spend over 10 minutes watching a young fox cub exploring in the orchard until it trotted off.

Fruit picking

 All the plums are now picked and sold - a good crop of Victoria plums plus a reasonable crop of the other less known varieties and lots of jam made and sold using plums, strawberries,  blackberries  and even elderberries and mulberries from the farm! We have now picked the majority of the pears, with large crop of Conference and surprising good quality considering they havent been sprayed although we are not expecting it to be so good in future years.  We hope to have some made into Pear Juice and also plan to pick some Perfection and Greensleeves apples this week for juicing. As we only have one cold store and pears and apples cannot be stored together, we are leaving the apples on the trees as long as we can. We are continuing to clear the vegetation around the ponds to open them up and hopefully encourage more wildlife and birds and make them so we can walk beside and enjoy them.
